The Yoga Extension is delighted to welcome Katie Rutherford from Edinburgh. This is a general level workshop suitable for those with 6 months+ of experience.

Katie has been studying Iyengar yoga since 1979, qualified as a teacher in 1987, and first visited the RIMYI in 1991 (her most recent visit being in October 2016). She holds a Senior Intermediate Level 2 certificate and is an assessor for IYA UK.

Katie’s teaching is very clear and articulate but also without judgment. She encourages each student to explore their own internal world on whatever level they choose and discover the amazing treasures to be found therein. Her philosophy is that a lifelong study of yoga is not a linear thing, not a series of advancements and achievements but a precious connection to one’s internal self, sometimes tenuous and fleeting, sometimes more profound and intimate, depending on what is going on in your external life.

Time: 11am -3:30pm

Iyengar Yoga - The Yoga Extension - Iyengar Yoga Classes Glasgow

Suitable for those new to yoga or for those who would like to refresh their basic skills. This course will be taught by Frances McKee who has over 20 years of teaching experience. She will guide you through the basics of Iyengar Yoga.

Iyengar Yoga is a very safe form of yoga with emphasis on precision in poses. Students learn through a carefully graded and systematic programme of asana (posture). Practicing yoga helps you overcome and prevent many stresses, strains, aches and pains. It promotes a firm foundation for health and wellbeing.

We look forward to helping you master the fundamentals of Iyengar Yoga. The solid foundation will give you the tools to stay healthy and help you develop your practice in an interesting and enjoyable way.

Advance booking is essential. This course costs £35 and will run weekly on Wednesdays for 4 weeks from 7:30-8:30pm.

This course is open to those who have experience of pranayama. If you have attended the previous course in May 2019 or the yoga retreat in Crete 2019 or you are a level 3 practitioner, this course will be appropriate for you.

The familiarity of the basics practiced in the previous course will enable more subtle techniques to be explored. There will be an emphasis on seated pranayama as well as deepening our understanding of Ujjayi, Viloma, and Brahmari. Kapalabhati will also be introduced. As each week builds from the previous it is not possible to join halfway through the course.

Frances meditation pranayama the yoga extension
Frances and Neil will be presenting a series of level 4 workshops. The intention is to explore the full range of the syllabus from introductory up to senior level 1. It is through exploring more advanced poses that new insights can be reached to help with the basics. This Level is for anyone interested in yoga who has a home practice and is familiar with working in a level 2 or 3 class.

Between them, Neil and Frances have more than 40 years of teaching experience. Both have continued to attend workshops and classes over that period, including courses at the RMIYI in Pune.

It’s rare to have two teachers teaching a workshop. The inspiration comes from Elaine Pidgeon and Meg Laing, the two most senior Iyengar teachers in Scotland. Their joint workshops and classes over the decades presented not only a fantastic learning opportunity but also cultivated a vibrant community of teachers and students, working together to learn and promote Iyengar Yoga. We hope to bring some of that spirit of cooperation and community to these workshops.

Frances and Neil both hold a Senior Level 1 teaching certificate with IY UK.

Yoga for Teens

Come and join Frances for our teen yoga class. Specially designed for teenagers, each 45-minute class will cover the fundamentals of yoga. Improving balance, strength and flexibility, yoga is great for people of any age and can help you navigate your way through teenage life. The classes will be fun, challenging and informative and suitable for all abilities.

Yoga for Kids

If you or your child (age 8-12) would be interested in this class, let us know at theyogaextension@gmail.com We plan to add it to our timetable from September. It will be lots of fun while also teaching your child discipline and introducing them to the calm yoga can bring.

Classes are for students who have attended Iyengar level 1 classes for at least a year, refining the basic asanas. Head balance will be introduced.

Classes are for students who have attended regularly for at least two years and who feel ready to begin intermediate poses and consolidate the inverted poses. Students working at this level are advised to develop a regular home practice. Classes may be up to 2 hours long to allow for a deeper practice.
